William Addo, Veteran actor may lose his eye sight if he is incapable of raising GHC 5,000 for his eye surgery.
During a recent interview on Wednesday, the 60 year old sadly stated that glaucoma has been diagnosed and he worries it may cause him blindness if he does not succeed in raising the required amount.
He said,”I have to go under eye surgery. I have distorted vision.as per doctor’s diagnosis it is a mixture of glaucoma and cataract and I must be getting my surgery done or else it may be a reason of fracture.”
As stated by Mr Addo, he has delivered letters to certain organizations but none of them has given any favourable response. However, he declared that some amount has been given by Kwame Sefa Kayi but he refused to reveal howmuch since the broadcaster has not allowed him to do so.
He said,” it’s only Kwame Sefa Kayi who has given me some amount till this time… I have dispatched copies of appeal to Cultural Forum, Ghana Actors Guild, Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts and many others but I’m still waiting for their favourable response even though it was before the start of Easter.”
Mr Addo was showing disappointment when asked about his feelings after being in such a condition, joined with not-so-positive response of the institutions.
“It’s ill-fated. I have worked devotedly for this country. I had been at the School of Performing Arts and got scholarship to go for overseas training. Ten of us went abroad but only two of us returned because in my opinion I owed a lot towards my country. At times, I wonder if I made right choices. After serving for thirty years, I received GHC 3.000 as my end of service benefit. Sometimes, I speculate whether we are in a country which pays tribute to our contributions.” he said.
Before working as an actor in Ghanaian films, William Addo had been a stage performer. He got education at the University of Ghana’s School of Performing Arts and even worked as a teaching assistant at the same school after his graduation.
Later on, he was given scholarship to do his maters abroad and he returned as a lecturer in charge of acting at the institution. Afterwards, he had been given the opportunity of working as in charge of concert part productions at National Theatre.
