Dzifa Gomashie, the Deputy Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts advised film producers to show the true image of Ghana in their films in order to project the country to the world.
The Deputy Minister shared her thoughts in a three day training program hosted by Film Producers Association of Ghana FIPAG with the support of the Canadian High Commission.
She stated that at times character names and costumes of Ghanaian films can help a foreigner evaluate the country and its values.
Dzifa Gomashie added that countries like the USA have created the images for themselves, which most of the people want to be part of, through films.
She clarified that America has created an image for themselves that attract everyone to be part of. Nigeria has created the image of them in such a way that she was afraid to visit Nigeria, until she went there and realized that she has never seen the image of Victoria Island in any movie. They show the image of rural Nigeria or the things that are not being done anymore. But that is the picture they have highlighted for themselves.
She urged the producers not to surrender to the pressure of their patrons but instead produce movies that project the correct image of Ghana which will allow Ghana to plant itself in the world to ensure that its identity is secure.
She said that if she demands something and don’t get it. She will adjust to what she can. She asked why to lose in the global culture and isn’t contributing. She said her worry is that we will allow the world to swallow us and we don’t have an identity anymore.
The Canadian high commissioner to Ghana, Christopher Thornley however, stated that he is impressed with how vivacious Ghanaian movie industry has become and that there is a film industry carries greater opportunity of economic development.
