An ambitious group of scientist set out on mission to learn about sleep pattern of Elephants and they found they have the shortest sleeping time.
A group of scientist started following a pair elephants to get the insight about their sleep pattern. What they found was that they sleep for only 4 to 6 hours in a day. Aside from that they rested for the 2 hours in the fresh environment mostly during the night.
The grand members of their group stayed up all night for several days and wondered to far places to lose the danger of lions and poachers.
Large mammals entered rapid eye movement only when they were on their feet and resting.
The Professor Paul Manager of University of the Witwatersrand claimed that this fact makes Elephants different from other mammals.
Further he also pointed that there is a connection about their big size and shortest sleeping time being a mammal.
According to some theories REM sleep is connected to the memory consolidation – which is the conversion of short term memory into long term memory.
Furthermore their assessment has also veiled that big Elephants sleep for lesser time than smaller ones. It is yet a mystery how these mammals live with such a short sleeping time.
