Gyedu Blay Ambolley who is one of Ghana’s Highlife legends, has told Ghana’s supposed Dancehall King, Shatta Wale is not creative enough that’s why he cannot create something unique but constantly claiming to be a Dancehall King when Dancehall does not originate from Ghana.
Ambolley spoke to Accra-based 3FM pointed out Shatta Wale by saying that you are sitting over here and calling yourself as Dancehall King, we know that the Dancehall was actually created in Jamaica. So are you a better king than those that created it, you who is replicating him.
Moreover, he said since we are not being genuine to ourselves. We don’t have anything that belongs to our origin coming from our side of this world. We are doing too much of a copy than becoming creative. That is where the problem lies with us who knows none other than copying.
Gyedu-Blay Ambolley is a Ghanaian highlife musician, songwriter, producer, and composer. The first musician from Ghana to formally inculcate rap forms into local highlife rhythms, Ambolley created the musical genre Simigwa.
