Kente cloth is one of the very famous clothing of Ghana. History and traditions run parallel with this very auspicious and superb piece of clothing ‘infrastructure’. The cloth primarily belongs to the Ashanti people.

The word ‘Kente’ means basket. The word has its origin in Ashanti dialect. Ashanti people inhabited the land of modern Ghana in seventeenth century. Akan and Ashanti are synonymously used terms.

Kente cloth is a woven cloth in short. Plenty of small pieces with different prints and structures are woven together to create what is called Kente.

Kente cloth of Ghana

Kente cloth

According to Ashanti tales and folklores, a couple of farmers were inspired by a spider web. They were inspired by the natural talent of spiders. The farmers tried to weave a web. In the process, they were able to generate a special piece of intermingled cloth which became famous as Kente.

Initially, the Kente cloth was made from Raffia fiber. But later on Raffia tree fiber was replaced by silk. Silk was expensive in medieval times and Ashanti people had to trade and import silk in seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

In contemporary times, the cloth is made of cotton. This makes it a much more affordable commodity to purchase and handle.

The cloth is a gentle mix of class and traditions woven and tied in strong knots to handle the pressures of fast changing global traditions.

The Adinkra cloth is the traditional dress of Ashanti people of Ghana. The cloth has unique prints, stamps, and patterns on it. The patterns are unique symbols which represent a story of a fairy tale. Adinkra cloth is an event-specific dress. For some, it is an Ashanti funerary dress.

The cloth is printed with a black dye which is called Adinkra in the local language. Each symbol, sign or picture reveals something about the traditions, history, and culture of Ashanti people. For example, a heart represents that one can always find space and room to improve and perform better. Moon and the stars represent shear faithfulness.

famous Ashanti cloth Adinkra

Adinkra cloth

Adinkra cloth looks simple apparently. The only difference between Adinkra and other traditional Ghanaian dresses is the use of Adinkra dye to print a unique structure on to the piece of cloth.

The word Adinkra literally means to be separated or to say Goodbye. The dress is worn by the people of the Ashanti kingdom of Ghana during funeral processions to see off their loved ones in style.

The dress has a symbolic value and is deep-rooted in the tradition and ancestral legacies of Ashanti people.

The Ashanti’s are one of the oldest groups of people to inhabit the former Gold Coast. ‘Fierce fighters’  are one of the major sub-classes of Akan people. They live in the central part of modern-day Ghana. The Ashanti are culturally diverse. They form strong ties with one another. This major west African tribe has its own democratic socio-political setup.

Gonja cloth is made of cotton. Gonja cloth has thick stripes and is woven by hand. The cloth has its roots in Ghanaian traditions. Ghanaians love hand-made clothes. This is one of the many wonders of this very beautiful and natural West African country.

Long and narrow pieces of fabrics are brought together and sewn. Dying is an important component in Gonja cloth making. Usually, the cloth has blue, black and white stripes.

Ghanaians love weaving and producing cloth from indigenous materials. Raffia fiber was initially used as the main ingredient in cloth making. Silk was introduced with the arrival of colonials in the region.

Gonja is a specialty of Northern Ghana. Residents of Northern Ghana introduced the cloth. They used 4 inches long cotton strips to seal the deal and produce this very auspicious, unique and unorthodox piece of variation in Ghanaian fashion.

famous Gonja cloth

Gonja cloth

It is believed that Nkrumah, the champion leader and the founding father of the nation, was wearing this very Gonja cloth as he declared the independence of the nation in 1957. Such is the value and importance of this fabric which is styled and oriented in very traditional Ghanaian mode.

Initially, the cloth was dedicated to the chiefs and highly distinguished personalities. Later on, it became the choice of public at large.

Gonja cloth is not only a dress code; in fact, it is used in making bed sheets, pillows, table tops and many more.

One cannot underestimate the value and importance of Ghanaian traditions. Even the Ghanaian youth is closely and very intimately associated with their ancestral norms and traditions. Hand-looming and micro-textile units are an integral part of Ghana.
