Idris Elba and Sonya Hamlin
Idris Elba was married to Kim Norgaard for four years from 1999 – 2003 and they have a daughter together who is now a teenager, but people did not really have an idea that Idris secretly got married again back in 2006 to lawyer Sonya Hamlin.
Idris Elba’s secret second wife was revealed today as a US lawyer who after only four months called it quits with him. Sonya Hamlin, now 44, stated that she was drunk when she and the Luther star got married at a Vegas chapel.
The couple had a short-lived romance and an acquaintance said: “It’s really heartbreaking story. She really cared about him and when their marriage ended, it broke her.”
Idris, 43, had just finished his role as Stringer Bell in The Wire in 2005 when they got to know each other through his manager, a college friend of Sonya.
According to the sources Idris and Sonya split up on whether or not to have kids and his longing to move to L.A.
As stated by Sonya they broke up after only four months after saying “I do!” because he wanted to concentrate on his acting career in L.A, whilst she was busy making a firm career for herself as a successful lawyer on the east coast.
Elba and Hamlin had been living with each other in Maryland for several weeks after he wrapped filming on The Wire. A source disclosed to a UK magazine about the night they wed in Las Vegas.
“I remember Idris. Both of them were very nice, not inebriated or nothing fanatical like that. They arrived at 5-6pm,” a source at the chapel says. “I recognized him because my brother’s a fan of The Wire. They were having a lot of fun. The person checking them in was kidding about them marrying in Vegas and Idris was giving it back.”
The marriage lasted only two months before Hamlin filed for divorce. The break up was caused by regular fighting over Idris wanting to relocate in Los Angeles.
“One of the reasons it ended was her practice was going great here but Idris longed to be in LA,” another source adds. “At some point he had a choice between being a husband or a heartbreaker. He preferred his career over her.”
Sonya’s mother, Betty Hamlin, recollects her daughter’s heartbreak after she and Idris got divorced. “It was a very agonizing relationship.”
