If you are a viewer of Uncle Ebo Whyte’s plays then you must be in predicament like us that which one of his plays is the best?
Although we have composed almost a dozen stories on his plays, yet we are in short of words to describe his recent great workpiece which is loaded with platitude about Ghanaians and our vulnerability to corruption.
In just One Million Pounds, Uncle Ebo has refined and treated the nation and continent’s greatest issue “corruption” into 2 hour drama with peculiar poise and knack.
Evidently modeled on the historic involvement in this year’s edition of X Factor Uk by Ghanaian duo Reggie N Bollie, One Million Pounds depicts the trend of selling and buying oneself in very less amount.
Three young men and lady performers are partaking in a music reality show in the UK and presenting on stage to be admired by audience.
The leader of this young men and woman is friendly with this groups’ lone lady participant who is the daughter of their manager.
Just before the final, the host of the show wants to buy the Africans out of the final because the organizers decide that it would be hurting the brand of the show if the Africans win.
He decides to give one million Pounds for this purpose but when the manager of music group comes in front of him, he negotiates for less and hence the manager takes 500,000 Pounds.
At this point, the show gets fascinating or rather abrasively irritating. The manager receives the half a million pounds to take his performers out of the finale, he packs 10,000 pounds each into four envelopes and gives them to the musicians and asks appraisal for his cleverness.
Two performers take the money eagerly, thinking what good changes 10,000 pounds at an exchange rate of 5.6 cedis may bring into their lives.
The leader of musicians’ group wants them to reject the money and so he pleads them. When they take a vote on this, only his girlfriend agrees with him, the other two go after the money.
To save themselves, the manager asks them that after arriving at Kotoka, they must issue a false statement which says that they left the finals in solidarity with the leader as he had to be with his mother who is in hospital in Ghana.
The artists who had taken 10,000 pounds realize that they had been tricked when robbers attack them and take all their money away.
We have seen many plays of Uncle Ebo but One Million Pounds is having a class of its own. No doubt, the ladies who were watching the show exclaimed their appreciation through shouting as though someone had paid them to shout.
