A 14-year old street vendor of Ghana, Attah Abraham has won the Marcello Mastroianni’s Best Young Actor Award at the 2015 Venice Film Festival.
He obtained the award for his top performance in a movie along with Idris Elba.
It is said that Attah Abraham is without any acting background.He was picked from the streets of Ghana during the shooting of Netflix’s soon to be released movie “Beasts of No Nation.”
Director of the movie expressed that, Cary Fukunaga, Atta Abraham was accidentally selected on the streets.
The Business Insider Cary Fukunaga stated that; the lead in ‘Beasts of No Nation’ was basically a street hawker before we shot the film. He had no film experience,a very little education…but he became a somewhat skilled actor, which was shocking to watch.
The director expressed thatdc, “his unlikely star’s name is Abraham Attah, and he is a 14-year-old who perform an 11-year-old child soldier in the film. Abraham’s character links a militant group from an unidentified West African country that is commanded by a cruel commander, played by Idris Elba (“Luther”)”.
The director described that about thirty of the children were also nominated “and we did this in theater workshop and tried acts that were in the script, and we would improvise.
The children are fast learners, they rapidly understood that the better they did the longer they remained as potential group of actors.
